What is a Soundex code?
The Soundex was developed to group together last names that sound the
same but are spelled differently. A Soundex code (made of a letter and three numbers)
is assigned to every distinct-sounding last name. For example, Smith and Smyth sound the
same and have the same Soundex code. Once you know a Soundex code,
you can research a surname in the National Archives census microfilm holdings.
Use the Soundex Machine
to find your code.
